Ardennes Coticule Bout Whetstone 8000–10000 Grit – Ultimate Finishing Precision for Blades Upgrade your sharpening experience with the natural "Bout"-type whetstone — a unique, handcrafted stone of irregular shape sourced from high-quality natural quarries.

Ideal for smoothing, honing, and final polishing, it offers exceptional precision for safety razors, knives, and blades in general.

    Instructions for Use

    1. 🧼 Wet the Stone

    • Use plain water, not oil.
    • Thoroughly wet the surface until a thin moisture film forms.
    • No soaking required like Japanese stones — Coticule works simply with water.

    2. 🌀 Prepare a Slurry (Optional)

    • Rub a small slurry stone on the surface to create a fine garnet-rich paste.
    • The slurry makes the stone more aggressive at first, and softens as it thins.

    3. 🔪 Start Honing

    • Keep the blade flat on the stone at an angle suitable for your tool.
    • Use consistent "X-shaped strokes" to sharpen the entire edge.
    • Do not press too hard — let the stone do the work.

    4. 💦 Gradually Dilute the Slurry

    • As you progress, lightly rinse the stone or add clean water.
    • This reduces abrasion and helps achieve a mirror-polish finish.

    5. 🧽 Clean After Use

    • Rinse the stone thoroughly with water.
    • Let it air dry naturally in a ventilated area — avoid sun or heat sources.

✅ Pass the blade edge at a 15–20° angle with even strokes.

✅ Don’t rub it like a synthetic stone — use gentle, calm pressure.

❗ Tip: Bout stones are excellent for fine polishing/honing, not for initial bevel setting.

"Bout" means the stone comes from a natural vein and is cut in an ergonomic, irregular shape — maintaining top performance. "Bout Selected" types are handpicked for consistent grain and usability.

Ideal for professionals and enthusiasts who value natural honing quality. This stone is eco-friendly, requiring only water — no oil or chemicals. Perfect for razors, straight razors, and tools needing sharpness. Compact size makes it easy to carry in bags or cases.

A well-maintained Ardennes Coticule can last a lifetime. It creates a natural slurry that enhances contact between blade and stone. This material enables gentle and consistent metal removal with no blade overheating.

    Frequently Asked Questions

A lower grit number (e.g. 220 grit) means a coarser surface that removes material faster — ideal for repairing dull or damaged blades.

A higher grit number (e.g. 8000 grit) means a finer surface — used for polishing and finishing the edge to a razor-sharp level.

Garnet is a group of natural silicate minerals known for their brilliant color, hardness, and wide use in both jewelry and industrial applications.

Garnet is often used as the abrasive material in sharpening stones and sandpapers because of its durability and angular shape. If a tool is labeled as garnet grit or garnet sharpening stone, it means the abrasive component is crushed garnet — excellent for smoothing and honing blades.
