After shave lotion or balm ?
The shaving routine is not complete without the application of Aftershave products. As is normal, the skin becomes hard after shaving, so these products are deemed necessary to soften and soften the skin.
In addition they are required to prevent any infections from possible cuts and to protect against irritation. They moisturise and heal the skin by preventing dehydration and dry skin.
Aftershave comes in both balm and lotion form. As with many other products in the traditional shaving category , the choice is based on your own preference and what you want from your Aftershave. This of course does not mean that the products do not have differences between them.
What are the differences between after shave lotion and after shave balm ?
After shave lotion and after shave balm are both products used after shaving to soothe the skin and provide relief from any potential irritation caused by the shaving process. While they serve a similar purpose, there are a few key differences between the two:
Consistency:
After shave lotion typically has a thinner and more liquid consistency, similar to that of a traditional liquid or gel-based lotion. On the other hand, after shave balm has a thicker and creamier texture, often resembling a moisturizing cream or ointment.
Moisturizing properties:
After shave balm tends to have more moisturizing properties compared to after shave lotion. The thicker texture of the balm allows it to provide greater hydration to the skin, making it beneficial for individuals with dry or sensitive skin.
Ingredients:
After shave lotion often contains a higher alcohol content compared to after shave balm. Alcohol-based lotions have a cooling and astringent effect, helping to close the pores and provide a refreshing sensation. After shave balms, on the other hand, typically have a lower or no alcohol content and may contain moisturizing ingredients such as shea butter, aloe vera, or various natural oils to nourish and soothe the skin.
Skin types:
Due to its moisturizing properties, after shave balm is generally recommended for individuals with dry or sensitive skin. The added hydration can help replenish moisture lost during shaving and prevent dryness or irritation. After shave lotion, with its cooling and astringent effects, may be preferred by individuals with oilier skin types as it can help minimize oiliness and provide a refreshing finish.
It's important to note that personal preferences can vary, and the choice between after shave lotion and after shave balm ultimately depends on an individual's skin type, preferences, and desired effects.
Alcohol content
The aftershave lotion contains a significant amount of ethyl alcohol. In most cases, an aftershave in the form of a lotion consists of 50% alcohol. However, there are cases where the product may contain up to 90% alcohol.
The percentage of alcohol contained in aftershave balms is very low, usually 2 to 5%. In fact, most of the ones available from companies do not contain any alcohol at all anymore.
WARNING! Even though lotion aftershave has a high percentage of alcohol you should watch out for the expiration date and special care is needed with aftershave balms. For further information read our article on when aftershave expires.
Perfume
Many men find aftershave lotion particularly refreshing because it has a strong scent. It is usually described as strong and glamorous. The strong smell of the lotion can make men feel more attractive.
Compared to aftershave lotion, balm is lightly scented, which is very often soothing and pleasant for those who do not like strong fragrances. In fact, there are quite a few users who find their subtle scent comfortable and more refreshing.
Microbial agent
Ethyl alcohol, which is the main ingredient in lotion, is known for its disinfectant properties. It is capable of destroying many types of bacteria, viruses and fungi. It is an excellent antiseptic for the skin that can keep it protected after shaving.
Although the balm contains small amounts of alcohol, its key ingredients such as coconut oil and aloe vera act as antibacterial agents.
Skin type
People with dry or sensitive skin should avoid using lotions after shaving due to the high amount of alcohol. Alcohol, as we know, is a dehydrating agent because it neutralizes moisture from the skin. Therefore, applying alcohol products can actually worsen dry skin.
Aftershave balm because it has less alcohol content becomes ideal for dry skin. Also, several contain essential oils, which act as a natural moisturizer. In fact of course balms are formulated for both sensitive and dry skin types and for normal skin types. They are suitable for all skin types.
