Choose Aftershave, Cologne, Eau de Toilette or Parfum

Hello!
I'm Giannis from HairMaker.Gr and today we’re tackling a very common dilemma: Aftershave, Cologne, or Eau de Toilette? Which one should you choose and why? I’ve tested dozens of products, and in this article, I’ll share experiences from professional shaves, hands-on trials, and feedback from barbershops.
In professional shaving, we usually recommend an aftershave with low alcohol content for more sensitive skin, or a summer cologne with citrus notes for a refreshing feel. But if you want to stand out during an evening outing, then an Eau de Parfum with 8+ hour longevity is the go-to choice.
One of my clients with dry and sensitive skin always prefers an aftershave balm with aloe vera. He avoids products with too much alcohol as they cause irritation.
During summer, many barbershop clients opt for a refreshing lime or vetiver cologne. It doesn’t last long, but it offers a fresh finish after shaving without being “heavy.”
For special occasions, I’ve used the Taylor Sandalwood Eau de Parfum. It lasted over 7 hours and I received several compliments – perfect for a stylish evening out.
Stick with me as we analyze their differences one by one, look at real product examples, and help you find the one that best suits your style and needs. ✅
Traditional Greek Grooming Habits
In Greek culture, cologne was an integral part of men's grooming, especially in times when shaving was done at home or in local barbershops. Men used traditional Greek colognes with lemon, lavender, or jasmine scents not only for freshness but also as a daily cleanliness ritual.
Even today, in traditional barbershops across Greece, applying a refreshing cologne after shaving is a symbol of care and hospitality. The Mediterranean cleanliness philosophy emphasizes natural aromas and simplicity without excess — a tradition passed down from generation to generation.

✨ What is Aftershave?
Aftershave, also known as post-shave lotion, is designed for use after shaving, mainly by men. Its primary purpose is to soothe the skin, provide antiseptic action, and prevent irritation.
Typically, aftershave contains a very low concentration of aromatic compounds, around 1–3%, so its scent is fairly mild.
An aftershave is formulated to disinfect freshly shaved skin, as the alcohol kills surface bacteria. Any small cuts or nicks will be sanitized thanks to alcohol’s ability to constrict blood vessels and accelerate the healing process. An aftershave will leave your skin disinfected, toned, refreshed, and lightly scented. The fragrance typically fades after about an hour.
Popular aftershave brands include Old Spice, Tabac, Lucky Tiger, and Brut. Many fashion designers lend their names to aftershave lines. Also, many well-known names in traditional shaving, such as Taylor of Old Bond Street, Proraso, and Extro Cosmesi, have developed their own aftershave brands.
You can read more about the history of aftershave, its importance, and how it has evolved over time.
Popular examples of aftershave include products by Clubman Pinaud and Taylor of Old Bond Street Luxury Sandalwood.
If you're looking for a truly strong aftershave, it's hard to beat Fine Accoutrements Snake Bite after splash and Extro Cosmesi Freddo Aftershave, both of which contain menthol. Fine Snake Bite contains five times more menthol than regular aftershaves!
- Contains low concentration of fragrance oils (1–3%)
- Alcohol-based to disinfect minor cuts
- Often includes moisturizing ingredients like aloe vera
- Light, short-lasting scent (30 minutes to 1 hour)
- Intended for skincare, not perfuming
Key Features:
- Contains low concentration of fragrance oils (typically 1–3%).
- Often has an alcohol base that disinfects small nicks and cuts.
- Usually includes moisturizing agents like aloe vera or panthenol.
- The fragrance is light and short-lived (30 minutes to 1 hour).
- Not intended for fragrance purposes but for skincare.
Ideal for daily use after shaving — not a perfume replacement.
Greek Tradition & Men's Grooming:
“Since old times, men in Greece used 'lemon water' or homemade cologne after shaving. It was an act of cleanliness, courtesy, and social presence. In traditional barbershops, aftershave always had a lavender or bergamot scent — and was often made by the barber himself.”
Today, companies like Cosmelia continue this tradition, offering traditional Greek colognes that emphasize local herbal ingredients such as oregano, lemon, and rosemary.
✔️ What is Eau de Toilette?
Eau de Toilette (EDT) is one of the most popular types of fragrance for both men and women. It strikes a balance between intensity and longevity while remaining relatively affordable.
Eau de Toilette is stronger than Eau de Cologne, typically containing about 10% aromatic compounds. It's one of the most potent aftershaves for men that you can buy.
It’s unclear when the first Eau de Toilette was created, but historical accounts mention Queen Elizabeth of Hungary (1305–1380) using a fragrant mix of oils and alcohol as her personal perfume. Today, Eau de Toilette is a general term used for stronger fragrances for both men and women.
Usually, Eau de Toilette is applied to your pulse points and lasts much longer — in some cases up to 8 hours — so reapplication is rarely needed.
You can find classic and traditional aftershave Eau de Cologne in this category.
Key Features:
- Contains 5–15% fragrance oils.
- Blends top notes that evaporate quickly with more stable heart and base notes.
- Longevity: 3–5 hours.
- Ideal for morning or everyday use.
The most commonly used fragrance — easy to find, affordable, and great for work or casual outings.
From Giannis - HairMaker.Gr:
“One of our favorite clients tried the Tabac Aftershave and told us: ‘The refreshing feel and traditional scent of Tabac is exactly what I was looking for after shaving!’”
Confirmed in shaving forums like Badger & Blade.
✨ What is Eau de Cologne?
Eau de Cologne is a light fragrance with citrus notes. It was originally created in Cologne, Germany in the 18th century.

- Contains 3–5% fragrance oils
- Has a cool, refreshing feel
- Lasts: 1–2 hours

Eau de Cologne (EDC) is a light type of fragrance with a long history, first appearing in the 18th century in Cologne, Germany.
Eau de Cologne became famous in Cologne, where it was originally created in 1709 by Johann Maria Farina, who named it Kölnisch Wasser ("Water from Cologne"). Today, the term Eau de Cologne is used broadly for men’s fragrances.
Eau de Cologne can have a fragrance oil concentration of up to 7%. This gives it a much stronger scent than a typical aftershave.
A long-lasting classic Eau de Cologne is the The Goodfellas Smile Furiah Aftershave Parfum 100ml, a cologne loved by men who shave daily. It offers an exciting scent that remains consistent for hours. A timeless favorite enjoyed by thousands of men is the Tabac Aftershave 100ml.
Tip from a Barber
“At my barbershop, we always distinguish fragrances based on skin type and time of day. Aftershave for cleanliness and toning, Cologne for freshness, and Eau de Toilette for personal style. The right fragrance choice makes a big difference in the shaving experience.”
— Nikos M., Barber & Grooming Expert, Athens

✔️ What is Eau de Parfum?
- ✔️ Avoid overapplying – a few drops are enough
- ✔️ Apply to warm areas of the body (neck, wrists, behind the ears)
- ✔️ Do not rub the area after applying – it ruins the fragrance structure
- ✔️ Store in a cool, dark place for maximum shelf life
- ✔️ Test it on bare skin, not on clothing
Eau de Parfum (EDP) is an intense, long-lasting fragrance ideal for evening outings or special occasions.
It is a concentrated and rich form of fragrance, offering depth and long wear. Mainly used for nights out or events where you want to make an impression. Its oil concentration ranges from 15–20%, providing complex and layered scent notes that last for hours.
The longevity of Eau de Parfum ranges from 6 to 8 hours, though it can often last even longer on the skin. This makes it ideal for nightlife or any occasion where long-lasting presence is desired. Which one should you choose?
Wondering which one is right for you? The answer depends on your lifestyle, skin needs, and fragrance preferences.
- ✔️ Want something simple after shaving? ➤ Aftershave
- ✔️ Looking for a fresh summer breeze? ➤ Eau de Cologne
- ✔️ Want balance between longevity and strength? ➤ Eau de Toilette
- ✔️ Need a rich scent that lasts all day? ➤ Eau de Parfum
The differences are not only about how long each one lasts. Each type offers a different intensity, purpose, and ideal use case. Knowing the specifics helps you choose correctly for each occasion and season.
No shave is complete without applying some fragrance. Often, aftershave or cologne follows the scent of the soap or cream used for a consistent and fresh result.
Apply your aftershave to the back of your neck, chest, or even on your clothes for longer wear — especially in warm or humid weather. If you have sensitive skin, choose a balm to avoid irritation. Moisturize first, then add your chosen scent to pulse points.
Some traditional fragrances loved by classic grooming enthusiasts include:
- ✔️ Sandalwood
- ✔️ Lime
- ✔️ Vetiver
- ✔️ Spanish Leather
- ✔️ Bay Rum
At our barbershop, clients often ask for the best aftershave choices — these are our favorites:

A bold oud fragrance with an oriental character — perfect for those wanting something daring and refined. - ✅ RazoRock Puros Aftershave Splash
A smoky delight with cigar and leather notes — for the gentleman seeking something different.
✨ Tip from Giannis at HairMaker.Gr:
“An experienced barber always keeps 2–3 options on hand: something fresh for everyday, and something more intense for special occasions.”

The Historical Origin of Men's Fragrances
✨ The use of fragrance by men dates back thousands of years. From Cleopatra's Egypt to Roman baths and the courts of Versailles, fragrance has never been exclusive to women. Men used oils and aromatic blends to enhance their social presence, display power, and express cleanliness.
In more recent history, the famous Eau de Cologne was created by Italian Giovanni Maria Farina in 1709 in Cologne, Germany. It contained light, refreshing ingredients like lemon, orange, bergamot, and rosemary. "Cologne" quickly became popular among European nobility and shaped the foundation for modern men’s fragrance compositions.
✔️ Aftershave appeared later, mainly in the 19th century, when shaving became a daily routine. Antiseptic ingredients like alcohol or menthol were added to protect the skin from irritation and infection. Its formula combined functionality with fragrance, making it an essential post-shave step.
✅ Eau de Toilette emerged as a more refined product that combined the ease of use of cologne with the complexity of perfume. It was often used for special occasions or professional meetings, enhancing a man's style and personality. With a higher concentration of essential oils than classic cologne, EDT remained more subtle than perfume but stronger than other everyday grooming products.
The evolution of men’s fragrances reflects the historical transformation of male identity — from practical necessity to cultural expression and personal statement.
⚠️ Skin Type & pH: How They Affect Fragrance
Your skin’s chemistry directly affects how a fragrance develops and lasts. Your natural pH, skin oiliness, and moisture levels alter the aromatic notes the moment the product touches your skin. That’s why the same Eau de Cologne can smell completely different on different people.
✔️ Dry skin: Evaporates volatile ingredients more quickly, which shortens fragrance longevity. Opt for formulas with higher oil concentration, like Eau de Parfum or scented balms. Applying unscented moisturizer beforehand helps lock the scent in.
✔️ Oily skin: Retains fragrance molecules longer, so the scent lasts more. However, if the product is too strong, it can become overpowering. Prefer light citrus colognes or gentle Eau de Toilettes that balance intensity with freshness.
If you don’t know your skin type, do a simple wrist test: if your skin feels tight after washing, you’re likely dry; if it gets shiny within a few hours, you lean oily. By tailoring your fragrance choice, you’ll maximize both longevity and scent accuracy.
- ✅ Moisturize first, apply fragrance after.
- ✅ Test the fragrance on your skin, not on paper strips.
- ✅ Avoid heavily scented soaps before testing a perfume.
- ✅ Reapply light colognes throughout the day.
- ✅ Note how the scent develops after 2 hours.
Dimitris N., Perfumer:
“Eau de Cologne is an ode to simplicity and freshness. It's not meant for longevity but for the feeling of refreshment. Perfect for summer and layering.”
Stelios K., Barber & Grooming Expert:
“At the barbershop, we recommend aftershave balm for men with dry skin. For those who want something bolder, a woody Eau de Toilette is a must.”
Ioanna M., Skin & Fragrance Trainer:
“Eau de Parfum isn’t for everyone. I always stress: apply a small amount to the right areas — never on clothes. It’s a tool of expression, not a cover-up.”
✨ Layering: Combining Aftershave, Cologne & EDT
The art of layering is about building fragrance in layers, starting with aftershave and finishing with Eau de Parfum. With proper technique, the result becomes unique, personal — and most importantly — longer lasting than any single product alone.
The base is a mild aftershave, like Proraso Green, which provides antiseptic care and freshness. Follow it with a light citrus cologne for brightness. Finish with an Eau de Toilette in the same or complementary family — like woody vetiver or aromatic fougère.
Be careful of contradictions! Don’t mix spicy orientals with creamy winter vanilla unless you want a real statement. Harmony comes when the heart notes of the fragrances complement each other.
For a structured routine: (1) Warm shower ✨ (2) Unscented balm for hydration ✨ (3) Aftershave with a matching accord ✨ (4) Cologne on wrists ✨ (5) EDT on pulse points. Wait 1–2 minutes between layers so the molecules blend properly.
- ✔️ Start from lightest to strongest.
- ✔️ Stick to the same fragrance family.
- ✔️ Keep the doses small — less is more.
- ✔️ Find a signature combo and use it consistently.
- ✔️ Test your layering combo at night to evaluate longevity.
Type | Concentration | Longevity | Ideal Use |
---|---|---|---|
Aftershave | 1–3% | 30 min – 1 hour | Post-shave |
Eau de Cologne | 3–5% | 1–2 hours | Everyday freshness |
Eau de Toilette | 5–15% | 3–5 hours | Morning outings |
Eau de Parfum | 15–20% | 6–8 hours+ | Evening moments |
Men’s Fragrance Application Guide
- Aftershave: Pat gently onto face and neck after shaving.
- Cologne: Spray on wrists or behind the ears for freshness.
- Toilette: 2–3 sprays on neck, wrists, and behind the ears.
- Parfum: A few sprays on warm areas — no rubbing.
✨ Step-by-Step: Fragrance Ritual
- Wash your face with cold water to close the pores.
- Apply aftershave or balm for disinfection and hydration.
- Wait 1–2 minutes for the product to fully absorb.
- Apply fragrance to pulse points (neck, wrists).
- Do not rub — let the scent develop naturally.
✔️ Season & Climate: What to Wear and When
Climate affects both the evaporation and longevity of fragrances. In hot weather, volatile notes release faster, while cold weather holds them close to the skin. That’s why choosing scents seasonally is key.
Mediterranean summer? Opt for a citrusy Eau de Cologne with mint or green tea: refreshing without being overpowering. Spring? Choose an Eau de Toilette with floral or aromatic notes — verbena, lavender, or rosemary — in tune with nature’s bloom.
Winter & fall: cold air embraces vanilla, amber, and woods. A warm Eau de Parfum with pine, myrrh, or leather adds a luxurious touch to your coat without fading. On rainy days, sandalwood aftershaves feel especially cozy.
✅ Tip: If you travel often, carry a portable 10ml atomizer with a neutral cologne. It lets you refresh on the go without taking the whole bottle.
- Summer ➤ Citrus Cologne 3–5%
- Spring ➤ Aromatic EDT 5–10%
- Fall ➤ Woody EDT 10%
- Winter ➤ Oriental EDP 15–20%
- Transitional seasons ➤ Herbal aftershave balm
✅ Fragrance Storage & Care
Even a masterpiece fragrance can “turn bad” if exposed to light, heat, or humidity. Essential oils oxidize, and the alcohol base deteriorates, leaving unpleasant odors. Luckily, a few simple steps are enough to keep your collection in top condition.
✨ Store bottles in a cabinet or drawer, away from windows and radiators. Ideal temperature: 15–20 °C. Avoid the bathroom — steam creates humidity that alters the top notes.
Keep the caps sealed and don’t pump air into the atomizer without reason. Oxygen = oxidation. For large bottles, decant a small amount into a dark mini bottle to limit air exposure to the rest.
If storing a scent for months, wrap it in a cotton cloth for extra light protection. Don’t refrigerate it — constant cooling–heating cycles break down the molecules.
- ⚠️ Light ➤ Destroys top notes
- ⚠️ Heat ➤ Speeds up alcohol evaporation
- ⚠️ Humidity ➤ Causes alteration & oxidation
- ✅ Cool, dark place = maximum shelf life
- ✅ Small atomizers for travel, not long-term storage
With proper care, your favorite fragrance can remain unchanged for over 5 years.
