Beard Colour and dye Selection Guide
We all know that the signs of aging are inevitable.
Hair, and beards, turn white and sometimes at an early age.
There are also cases where the color of the beards does not match the color of the hair.
People with dark hair have very light beards or vice versa and this contrast is not in all cases flattering.
However, there are things you can do to look younger or change the contrast.
Your main ally is beard dye.
If you have thought about dyeing your beard, then this guide to doing it at home will help you a lot.
How to choose the right color
So you have decided to dye your beard.
Now it's time to choose the right color.
In the majority of cases, this means choosing the color that matches your hair color.
Beard hair is coarser, thicker and drier than hair, so absorbing dye into facial hair is a little more difficult.
For some men, the best option is to use a beard dye that is lighter than the intended effect.
Professionals often recommend choosing a color that is a few shades lighter.
It's better to come out lighter and go through it again than to come out darker and look unnatural.
Of course, this means that you will have to buy dye again if you don't get the desired result.
The other option is to use a darker dye, which takes less time and lasts better when trying to cover grey hair.
But be very careful with the amount of time you leave it on, especially on black because if it comes out too bright, it will be obvious that you have dyed it.
You don't want to dye so dark that people will notice the changes immediately.
A beard that is slightly lighter than your natural color is less pronounced and noticeable to the outside world.
At least in the beginning until you find the brand, color and time to leave it on.
In black it's not so much the color that matters, but the time.
Leave it on for less time and revisit it to be safe.
Now that you've found the color, it's time for the dye job.
Preparation
The first step, is to get the necessary materials.
You will need:
- Beard dyeing
- Acetic acid (already contained in some preparations)
- Disposable gloves (to protect the hands from the paint)
- Paint brush
- Paint ball (for proper mixing)
- Paper or towel (if you don't mind being painted)
It is also a good idea to do an allergy test before applying the dye.
Mix a very small amount of dye and apply it to a part of the body you don't mind.
Leave the dye on the skin for 24 hours.
Rinse with soap and if the skin is irritated or inflamed, choose another dye.
Some people say it's good not to wash the beard before dyeing to retain its natural oils and make it work better.
The most common opinion of course is that it works best on a clean beard.
By removing dead cells and strengthening the hair through beard shampoo.
It is also important to give your beard the shape you want.
So trimming is best done before dyeing.
Mixing of the Dye
To avoid skin irritation and staining, wear gloves.
Disposable plastic gloves give better control of the brush.
Before mixing, make sure to wear old clothes in case of dye spills.
Many dye kits, as mentioned, contain acetate beforehand.
If they do not contain it, buy it separately.
Put the dye and the acetate in the bowl, carefully following the dye instructions for the ratio.
It is usually 1-1, but it depends on the product.
Mix enough dye, by eye, for one pass of the face.
Dye beard
After mixing, dip the tip of the brush into the dye and start applying it.
Move the brush up and down and try to go all over without touching the facial skin in the surrounding areas.
After making sure the paint has gone everywhere wait for the time the instructions say.
It is advisable, as mentioned above, to be a bit cautious and leave it at the minimum they suggest the first few times to see the results.
Then you can go through it again to be sure.
But usually the instructions are not that far off from the time it takes.
If for example a dye suggests 3-7 minutes, leave it 3.
Once you get a little more experience and see how fast the brand you have darkens them, the next few times will be much easier.
Increase the time gradually and find the tone of color that works for you.
Once you have waited long enough, rinse with lukewarm, to cold, water.
Dry with paper or a towel after the first few rinses, after making sure most of the dye is gone.
Do not wash them with shampoo directly.
Leave them for a while and preferably use a gentle shampoo for dyed hair, or a beard shampoo, to preserve the color.
That's all you need to know about how to choose the right beard dye, and how to do it yourself at home.
It may seem a little difficult at first, but once you try it and see the white hairs disappear, it will be worth it.
