Everything about the hair pomade
The history of pomades
It has been a long time since the first appearance of the hair pomade. It dates back as far as the 1800s, and back then it was made mostly from bear fat. Fortunately with the turn to the 20th century came better ingredients in the form of jelly, lanolin, beeswax and even lard. Due to its oil-based nature, hair pomade usually requires a few washes to get it out of the hair completely.
Towards the middle of the 20th century, Pomade gained fame because of the hairstyles used at that time. A famous social group, known as "greasers" , got its name from the use of hair pomade.
Today hair pomades remain true to their origins , a hair product that holds, remains flexible and gives shine. As in the previous century, new technologies and ingredients were introduced .
Pomade ingredients
Unlike modern hair gels, hair pomade is composed of rejuvenating substances and essential ingredients such as fat and pleasant fragrance.
The only animal fats widely used in cosmetics nowadays are beeswax and wool wax - a by-product of wool production.
The base materials are then enhanced with natural or synthetic fragrances, as well as olive oil and coconut fat.
On the one hand, the fat determines the hardness of the wax and on the other hand, it provides a certain shine. Apart from that, many claim that it rejuvenates their scalp and especially dry hair.
How to use the hair pomade?
Most hair pomades should be applied to lightly towel-dried, damp hair.
To start styling your hair with pomade, take a small amount at the tip of your finger, remember you can always add more as needed. The trick is to warm it up by rubbing it between your fingers to get it ready to use.
Then, using both hands, massage it into your hair, back to front, and from root to tip. For extra volume and to keep it firm, you can dry it however you like.
The Effect of the Pomade
When the product is applied, your hair will have a silky shine that will make you look quite carefree. When the pomade hardens, your hair will remain soft and loose enough to run a comb through your hairstyle and give it the shape you want.
It also won't dry your hair directly, unlike modern gels which often contain alcohol and dry hair.
The bittersweet smell may not be to all tastes, especially since it lasts for quite some time. It spreads easily on the hair and provides decent results for men with fine hair, while it cannot tame thicker hair very well because it is too soft.
How to Choose Pomade
If you decide to pick a pomade to try, you should start with a medium to soft one, so that it's easy to apply to your hair and allows you to learn how to use it without getting frustrated.
It is very different from modern products, and it takes a little patience and a lot of practice, where it is essential to get the right result.
Compared to other hair products, pomade lasts a very long time, and you only need to put a tiny bit for each application. In case you prefer more hold, mix with some harder pomades when you are more familiar with them.
In general, it's best to buy a number of different kinds and decide what you like best. Since most pomades cost just a few dollars, it's a good investment.
Types of Hair Pomade
There are two types of pomades: fat-based pomades and water-based pomades.
