The Merkur was founded by the family of Hermes in 1896, and became the property of Wolfgang Hannemann about 1980. Today the company is in the hands of the 4th consecutive owner, the family business DOVO.
In the early 20th century Merkur dealt mainly with the construction of straight razors, and later for several years manufactured razors for security cameras, shavers for mustache and end and security cameras.
The company was started by Emil Hermes and a symbol of the Mercury's head. In the early years of the Hermes tried to give his name - something that could not be done because there was already a company with this name. This resulted in the Latin rendering of Mercury - and created the Merkur we all know.
From 1980 onwards, Merkur became known worldwide for its superior design and workmanship of shaving products which distinguishes it today.
