Ancient Egypt:
Men’s grooming started at Egypt at 10,000 B.C. Ancient Egyptians had a serious love for the plant of Aloe Vera, in addition to mare milk, essential oils, e.t.c.
In ancient Egypt, theses luxuries had many purposes. For example, burned almonds,lead, copper, ochre, ash, malachite and chrysocolla which where used for making eye-liner.
It was applied in such a way so that it reduced the harsh sunlight on their eyes.
Sun protection was one of the main reasons that gave birth to the manufacturing of skin and face care products. They were used for making their smell and appearance better.
The Egyptians used essential oils a lot, in order to cover their body smell.
The most popular ingredients used in these oils were:
myrrh, thyme, marjoram, chamomile, lavender, lily, mint, rosemary, cedar, rose, aloe
and even olive oil.
Romans:
In contrast to the Egyptians, Romans created private and public baths to promote cleanliness.
These public baths became Hot-spots for men, where they shared their grooming and secrets!
The Romans had a deep love for hot water and steam, which they took from the Egyptians,
who used essential oils in their hot baths.
The romans were also the first to experiment with hair dyes. They used blonde color in a desperate attempt to look younger.
Middle Age until the age of queen Elizabeth:
When the rule of the church and the Roman Empire fell, male grooming poducts and
cosmetics had a great decline, with some priests condemning grooming as “the devil’s work”.
During the rule of queen Elizabeth A’ of England, male grooming received the attention it used to have, as one of the most popular products was introduced in the market, Water Rosemary. Another very popular product was sage, which was used for teeth whitening.
They used wine for their skin and honey and eggs for reducing wrinkles.
Victorian Era:
The Victorian Era was when the first popular grooming products were introduced.
Soaps became a necessity in most households and the technological advancements
meant the development of anti-aging products.
Skin care started appearing, but mostly for women and so much for men.
The 1900’s:
With the birth of Hollywood came the image of people with perfect white teeth
and clean-shaven skin.
