Differences between shavette and falsetto

The shavette was originally created as a more economical and easier to maintain alternative to the falsetto.

Over time they have gained a larger audience and many people now prefer them for shaving, while they are also used a lot by barbers.

In this guide we will analyse all their differences, the advantages of a shavette , and the reasons why it is worth having a shavette in your collection.

Mechanism

While they have the same mode of operation, in terms of folding and handling when shaving, they differ in the way they cut.

A falsetto is made of high quality steel that has been sharpened lengthwise and is therefore closed in the handle to prevent it from being exposed.

The razor on the other hand, has a special mechanism on its tip that allows you to insert half razor blades double-sided.

So it relies on double-sided razors for cutting and you need to supply either whole razors that you break in half, or already cut razors known as half blades.

There are two main Shavette mechanisms:

  1. Shaving Security Shavettes

These sabers have a guard on the end that must be lifted to add the blade.

After lifting it, you must separate the two strips of metal that form the edge of the shavette and add the blade to the appropriate notches.

Then you rejoin the strips, apply the guard and you have a blade that is firmly attached to the inside of your shavette.

      2.Insert Shavette Type

With a detachable mechanism that slides in and out of the shavette.

These shavettes offer easy insertion of the blade.

Simply detach the tip, insert the blade into the mechanism and push again to fit.

Many different and specific mechanisms for razor insertion have now come out (such as screw, injector, etc.), but these two are the most common and ideal options for beginners.

Maintenance and Cost

A falsetto needs special care and constant maintenance to keep its edge and remain sharp.

This means that you either have to send it from time to time to an expert who knows the process, or you have to learn it yourself and you will need special materials such as sharpening stone and Strop Paste for Sharpening Strap

This procedure is called stropping and involves the use of a special leather strap and paste on special plates used for sharpening.

The cost of buying a strop is quite high and the materials needed for stropping or sending it to a specialist adds even more expense.

shavettes on the other hand are quite a bit more economical and the only cost after purchasing them is the blades which is quite low.

Shaving and efficiency

Obviously the reason why straight razors are much more expensive than shavettes is the material of construction and the process of creating them.

The high quality steel and the very sharp edge of the trowel, undoubtedly offer a deeper shave and due to the material they have a longer life span.

Nevertheless, the sabre is the easiest and most economical way to start this kind of shaving.

It offers the advantage that you can try many different razors that perform very well.

The shavette also, although it cuts less, is much more forgiving of mistakes with shorter cuts as you learn the correct technique.

These were the main differences between a shavette and a falsetto with some general information on how a shavette works.

Now here are some features that make them an ideal addition to your collection:

Precision

shavettes offer the same options and possible shaving angles as a razor.

They also outperform other machines in the precision they offer when shaving, due to the technique and the way we hold them.

These features make them ideal for a deep shave all over the face, shaping a beard angle and finally even in barbering, for neck and details.

Cost and Lifetime

As we mentioned in the comparison with falsettos, shavette are an economical and durable option.

A shavette will last for a long time without any wear and tear depending on how much you take care of it.

There are many factors for cost such as the material of the handle ( wood, metal or plastic) and the blade insertion mechanism.

Then the only cost is the razor blades, which compared to machines and parts are far superior.

Double edge razors (cut in half or as half blades) generally outperform cartridge blades and offer a deeper shave, while being more environmentally friendly and economical.

Each razor can be used from one to five times, depending on the material of construction and proper cleaning and storage after shaving.

Appearance and design

Let's not forget to mention the obvious.

The appearance of the shavette and the straight razor is iconic.

From references to movies and general pop culture and tradition, the shavette has stood the test of time.

It offers an at-home barbershop shaving experience with amazing results.

Finally, its design and the fact that it folds up make it very convenient to carry and store.

These were the main reasons why it is worth using a shavette for your shaving.

It offers a pleasant shaving experience with an amazing result based on its design.

For many years it has been a favourite tool in barbershops and in the home of many shavers.

If you master the technique, it is sure to win you over!

Enjoy your next shave!
