After every shave, the razor's edge develops microscopic deformation — too small to see, but enough to make the next shave feel rougher than it should. A strop realigns those tiny folds back into position without removing any steel from the blade. The result is a smoother glide, less skin drag, and a noticeably cleaner shave — all from two minutes of stropping before you start.
The difference comes down to surface feel, durability, and how they age with use. Leather strops provide the right amount of draw and resistance for effective stropping, and they improve over time as they absorb trace oils from the blade. Synthetic strops are more resistant to moisture and easier to maintain — better suited to professional barbershop use or humid environments. For home use, a quality leather strop is the most effective everyday choice.
The standard practice is 20 to 30 slow, controlled passes per side — enough to realign the edge without overdoing it. The weight of the razor provides all the pressure needed — don't press down. Rushing or using too much force risks rolling the edge rather than straightening it. Slow and consistent always produces a better result than fast and aggressive.
A leather strop benefits from occasional conditioning to keep the surface supple and effective — but it's not high-maintenance. Every few months, apply a small amount of leather conditioner or dedicated strop paste to preserve flexibility and prevent cracking. After each stropping session, wipe the surface lightly with a clean cloth to remove any metal residue. A strop that feels stiff or looks dry is overdue for conditioning.
Stropping is designed for fixed-blade straight razors — that's where it makes a real difference, because the blade is permanent and needs regular maintenance to stay sharp. For shavettes with replaceable blades, stropping serves no practical purpose since each new blade is already factory-sharp. If you use both tools, the strop is reserved exclusively for the fixed-blade razor.
Start with a classic hanging leather strop at least 50cm long — enough room for comfortable, full strokes without running out of surface mid-pass. Look for strops from Dovo or Thiers Issard, which offer reliable leather quality and well-balanced tension for everyday use. Avoid very cheap options without a known brand behind them — uneven or overly soft leather can roll the edge instead of aligning it, defeating the whole purpose.
