If you think the razor does the work and the blade is secondary, in practice the opposite is true. The razor determines the angle and blade gap, but the blade does the actual cutting. A sharp blade in a mild razor can deliver better results than a dull blade in an aggressive one. The right blade reduces passes, reduces irritation, and gives a cleaner cut — it literally transforms the shaving experience.
If you see dozens of blade brands and don't know which to buy, the truth is nobody can tell you which is "best" — because it depends on your beard and your razor. Feather is the sharpest but also the most unforgiving of angle mistakes. Astra SP is more balanced and suits most shavers. Derby is milder, good for sensitive skin or beginners. Personna falls somewhere in between. The only reliable solution is a sampler pack with 5-6 brands — try each for 3-4 shaves and see which one works for you.
If you see "platinum coated," "chrome stainless," or "PTFE" on blades and wonder whether it matters, coatings affect both edge longevity and skin feel. Platinum reduces friction and gives smoother glide. Chrome increases corrosion resistance. PTFE (Teflon) creates a thin layer that reduces tugging. Many blades combine two or three coatings. In practice, a well-coated blade feels smoother on the face and holds its edge for more shaves.
If you keep using the same blade until it tugs and don't know when to change, the answer depends on your beard — but there are clear signals. Most DE blades last 3-7 shaves, depending on beard density and steel quality. If you feel tugging instead of smooth glide, if you need extra passes, or if you get irritation in spots that are normally fine, the blade is done. Don't economize on blade changes — each blade costs just a few cents.
If you're not sure whether the same blade fits a safety razor and a shavette, the answer depends on the shavette type. DE blades (double-edge) are used whole in safety razors. In most shavettes, they're snapped in half and one half is inserted. Some shavettes (Feather Artist Club, Kai Captain) accept dedicated single-edge blades that aren't compatible with safety razors. Always check your tool's specifications before buying blades.
If you're switching from cartridge to safety razor and don't know which blade to try first, don't buy 100 of one blade before testing it. Start with a sampler pack containing 5-7 different brands (Astra, Derby, Personna, Shark, Rapira, etc.) and try each for 3-4 shaves. Keep notes — how smooth it felt, how much irritation you got, how many shaves it lasted. After 3-4 weeks you'll know exactly which blade you want — then buy in quantity.
